Thriving in Recovery

Mountainside M Logo By Mountainside

Being involved in things I enjoy is what keeps my life exciting. Activities like attending a concert, going to the gym, showing up to help a friend, or being active outdoors help to fill my spirit. I couldn’t imagine recovery without doing the things I love, but it wasn’t always that way.

Early recovery was about doing anything and everything that I was invited to, even the things that I didn’t think I would enjoy and did not want to attend. I walked into the fear of the unknown. That is how I overcame my social anxiety, became comfortable in my own skin, and really began to connect with others.

Today, with over 10 years clean, I still hold on to the same philosophy: do the things that scare you. Working through the fear is what helps you evolve. It is that moment between thinking and acting that creates anxiety. If you push through, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Working for Mountainside’s Alumni Department has given me the rewarding opportunity to do so many new things, including creating events designed for everyone’s enjoyment.

Getting and staying involved with the Alumni Department is important. Treatment may end, but recovery is a lifelong journey. Expanding upon your sober support system is necessary for your journey, and I don’t know about you, but having fun in recovery is what makes me feel alive!

The 4th Annual Alumni Event will be happening in September. This year, we will be offering opportunities for you to participate in Mind Body Spirit or Adventure workshops and hear messages of hope from 2 speakers: Joseph Green, spoken word artist, educator, and motivational speaker; and Brandon Novak, professional skate boarder, stunt man, author, actor, and motivational speaker. Then in the afternoon, we will be heading to the field for a Mountainside picnic.

I hope you will join us at one of our many events we have planned. And if you are nervous or uncertain, join anyway! We are all here to support each other on the path to recovery.
